Why Is My Car Shaking at Highway Speeds?

4 min read

A vibration that shows up on the Parkway but disappears around town is one of the most common complaints we hear. Where you feel it tells us a lot.

Felt in the steering wheel

Vibration primarily in the steering wheel usually points to the front wheels: an out-of-balance front tire, a lost wheel weight, a bent wheel, or a tire with internal belt separation.

Felt in the seat or floor

Vibration you feel through the seat more than the wheel often comes from the rear tires or driveline components.

Only while braking

If the shudder appears only when you slow down, look at the brakes — usually rotor thickness variation rather than a tire issue.

Other causes worth checking

  • Worn wheel bearing
  • Worn tie rods or ball joints
  • Bent wheel from pothole damage
  • Uneven or cupped tire wear
  • Loose or improperly torqued lug nuts

The fix is usually simple

Most highway vibrations come down to balancing, a tire issue or a worn suspension component — all things we can check quickly. Call 732-655-4022 and describe where you feel it.
