How Do I Know When My Brakes Need Replacing?

Brakes rarely fail without warning. They give you sounds, feel and behavior changes long before they become dangerous — the trick is knowing what those signals mean.

Here is what we look for when a customer brings a vehicle into our Toms River shop with a brake concern.

Most brake pads have a small metal wear indicator that contacts the rotor when the pad material gets low. That is the high-pitched squeal you hear at low speed. It is not an emergency, but it is a scheduling reminder.

Light squeal on a damp morning that disappears after a few stops is usually surface rust burning off, not a problem.

Grinding usually means the friction material is gone and metal is contacting metal. At that point you are damaging the rotor every time you brake, and what would have been a pad job becomes pads and rotors. Do not wait on this one.

A rhythmic shudder when you slow down from highway speed usually points to rotor thickness variation or warping from heat. It gets worse over time and is worth measuring.

A pedal that feels spongy, travels further than it used to, or slowly sinks while you hold it at a light can indicate air in the system, a fluid leak or a failing master cylinder. This is a safety issue — have it inspected right away.

If the vehicle veers when you brake, a caliper may be sticking or a hose may be restricted. It can also be a tire or alignment issue, which is why a proper inspection looks at the whole picture.

Measuring pad thickness and rotor thickness turns guesswork into numbers. We will tell you how much life is left, what needs replacing now, and what can safely wait until your next visit.
